How To Sharpen Full Chisel Chain
- #one
Trying to sharpen my sharpening skills, Ive googled a few short videos. As my luck, they all tell you something dissimilar.
Is the side plate supposed to be ninety degrees, or hooked a little, or alot? When I use a guide(stihl cheepo) I get more of a 90 caste angle. When I free hand it(not holding the file to depression either) I get more of a hook.
Too, acme plate angle. Using oregon lgx the box says 25 caste top angle. Is in that location advantages/disadvantages to using thirty degree or 35, or something different? I ever simply follow the stamped line in the peak of the cutter.

I've got several different file guides, Oregon, Stihl, Husqvarna. They all work okay. Ane solar day I decided to just try information technology costless hand, non only improve results, but quicker also. New, quality files so you can experience the "bite" is the reply. Like y'all I just follow the angle of the witness marker. REJ2

I freehand file mine; like REJ2 says you need good abrupt files so they do the piece of work, non you lot.
I come out from under the molar with every stroke, pushing material out the flat side of the tooth. I also requite the file a minor twist as I push button, to work under the meridian cutter and push material out/forward and upwards. This gives me a really aggressive wire edge on the top and side cutters. It doesn't final long but WOW, for the first few minutes!
I work the file Non parallel to the superlative face of the cutter. I'm coming upward and out the side at a small angle to the bar, not perpendicular. Call me a rebel, but it really gets that point on the chisel. And so I come up across the underside of the top cutter, rotating the file, to acuminate the whole tooth. It takes a bit of do to get information technology right, simply it's well worth it. Use your off manus thumbnail to guide the file across the cutter.
Distressing for the lousy explanation, just give information technology a rough guesstimate and possibly it'll popular out at you as you lot try. It feels really nice with a sharp file.

Get file o plates or the croaking combi gauge..
I would say stick with whatsoever angles the chain comes with or whatever angle you tin can comfortably go a skillful edge.
The point of the chisel is very of import. You lot want to mimic a new chain to keep it cut the same. Go a new chain and wait over the cutter very closely. Just some suggestions.
When filing make sure you get a good bite and look at the molar face subsequently taking a swipe to get an idea. Clamping the bar in a shop or stump vise can make things easier.
Admittedly I'grand not the greatest hand filer but the fop and particularly the combi gauge make it easy to sharpen and maintain my chains.
And any yous do, stay away from fixed depth gauges..

Y'all've gotten some proficient advice on sharpening.
I know I'g existence anal, simply come on guy's. There is no such thing as "total chisel" chain. In that location is semi-chisel. There used to be a chipper. There is circular chisel, and then there is the foursquare chisel. Just I have never seen in whatever chain manufactrures literature an ad for "full chisel.
If I was going to phone call a type of chain "full chisel" it would look similar this.
